After the Chili Challenge, Lenexa's Evenings Stretch From Oak Park Commons to Vista Village

  • October 15, 2026

The 39th Lenexa Chili Challenge filled Old Town on Oct. 9 and 10 with nearly 200 teams, music and free admission. It ran without fireworks, which the city has retired. For the rest of the fall, most of the city's own events gather around City Hall and the Lenexa Public Market, with a few at parks and one on Cottonwood Street. The three places that opened this year for spending a whole evening went somewhere else. One is near 95th and Quivira on the east side. One is at City Center. One is out by Prairie Star Parkway and Ridgeview Road. If you live in one part of town, the newest option may be a 15-minute drive away.

The East End Got a Ballpark

Sandlot Social opened in June at 12120 W. 95th St. It took the north-side space at Oak Park Commons that Northern Tool + Equipment used to occupy, near 95th Street and Quivira Road. According to the Johnson County Post, the room has 10 batting simulators. Each holds six to eight players and can recreate well-known ballparks, with tees available and an outfield wall that moves in or out. Owner Lance Windholz told the Post that the "power boost" setting, which adds distance to every hit, has been a favorite.

The food is ballpark fare: hot dogs, burgers, wings, hot honey cheese bites and bang bang shrimp. There are craft cocktails, plus flavored "dirty" sodas such as a root beer and butterscotch "buttery beer" for anyone not drinking. Games play on a sportsbook-style wall of screens.

Sandlot Social also has the earliest weekend start of the three new spots. It opens at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

City Center Got a Late Night, and Kept the Civic Calendar

Neat opened this summer at 16953 City Center Drive, near Pure Barre and BODY20. Savoy Tea Co. had held the space for about five years before it closed in spring 2025. The Johnson County Post described the new interior as black walls, gold accents, leather couches and lots of plants. Co-owner Dipti Bhakta calls the style "vintage modern." Benjamin Davalos runs the bar program. His "Gun for Hire" is a cross between an espresso martini and an old fashioned. His "Dolce Vita" mixes Grand Marnier, Aperol, Italian amaretto, citrus and a touch of saline.

Neat stays open later than anything else on this list: until midnight on Thursdays and Fridays and until 1 a.m. on Saturdays.

The city's own events are a short walk away. The Lenexa Public Market at 8750 Penrose Lane has two more Friday Night Sound Bites shows this month. Grand Villanova plays Oct. 16 and Bound & Determined plays Oct. 23. The series ends Oct. 30. The market's Rotating Table is new this year. It brings a different pop-up restaurant into The Kitchen on the last weekend of each month. KiK's BBQ has the October slot on Oct. 23 and 24.

City Center Live performances are free, and the city lets guests bring food and drinks from the Public Market. That means a market dinner and a free concert can share one parking spot.

The West End Got a Biergarten Built to Draw a Crowd

KC Bier Co. opened in late July at 18030 W. 98th St. in the new Vista Village development, just off Prairie Star Parkway and Ridgeview Road. It is the brewery's first Johnson County location, a decade after its 2014 start in Waldo. The Waldo flagship is mainly a production facility with a small tasting room. The two-story Lenexa building is designed mainly as a gathering place. It has a large patio, an amphitheater, a children's play area, an off-leash dog park and a second-floor deck where guests can watch the beer being brewed. The menu includes schnitzel, döner kebabs and pretzels.

Founder Steve Holle told the Johnson County Post that he expects visitors from well beyond the neighborhood. "With K-10, I-435, I-35, and (U.S.) 69 all being here, I think it's a convenient place for people to get here in a short period of time," he said. That location is why the west end feels different from City Center. Vista Village is set up to pull from the whole metro along the highways.

Here is how the three new spots compare on hours, as reported when each one opened:

Sandlot Social Neat KC Bier Co.
Location 12120 W. 95th St., Oak Park Commons 16953 City Center Drive 18030 W. 98th St., Vista Village

Latest close Midnight Fri. and Sat. 1 a.m. Sat. 10 p.m. Fri. and Sat.

On a Saturday, Sandlot Social is open first, KC Bier Co. has the daytime patio and play area, and Neat is open the latest.

The Rest of the Fall, in Date Order

The city's own late-fall events stay close to City Hall, the Public Market and the parks, with one stop on Cottonwood Street. The KC Bier Co. events below come from the brewery's Lenexa page. That page also lists KC Oktoberfest, but Oktoberfest took place Oct. 2 and 3 at Crown Center, not in Lenexa. Before driving out for any brewery event, check which location is hosting it.

  1. Tuesday, Oct. 13, 6 p.m. Second Tuesday Jam Session, listed on KC Bier Co.'s Lenexa calendar.
  2. Wednesday, Oct. 14. Family Night at the Public Market, with fire-safety activities and Storytime. Music Bingo is listed at KC Bier Co. at 6:30 p.m. the same night.
  3. Friday, Oct. 16. Grand Villanova at Friday Night Sound Bites.
  4. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 6:30 p.m. Paint & Sip Night at KC Bier Co.
  5. Thursday, Oct. 22, 6 p.m. A Lager Than Life Bier Dinner at KC Bier Co.
  6. Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24. Bound & Determined at Sound Bites on Friday, with KiK's BBQ at the Rotating Table both days.
  7. Saturday, Oct. 24, 8 to 11 a.m. Truck or Treat at 7700 Cottonwood St. This free event has truck displays, pumpkin smashing and treats.
  8. Thursday, Oct. 29, 4 to 8 p.m. Enchanted Forest at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, 8801 Greenway Lane, with a hayride, pumpkin decorating and performances.
  9. Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31. The last Sound Bites night of the season. KC Bier Co. lists a Schwarzbier Release Party with a Spaceballs screening on Friday and Nosferatu with a live soundtrack on Halloween night.
  10. Saturday, Nov. 14, 6:30 p.m. City Center Live presents the Fountain City String Quartet in City Hall's Community Forum. Admission is free.
  11. Saturday, Nov. 21. The Holiday Farmers Market sets up inside Lenexa City Hall, 17101 W. 87th St. Parkway. The city's event page lists two different sets of hours, so confirm the time closer to the date. The vendor list has not been posted yet.

Looking further ahead, the Sar-Ko Aglow Lighting Ceremony is on Dec. 4.

What Vista Village Is Still Waiting On

KC Bier Co. is the only confirmed food and drink business open at Vista Village so far. Pecan Jacks, an ice cream shop, has been announced for 9707 Ridgeview Road. The Kansas City Star reported in May that it would open this fall but gave no date. As of today, the shop's own location page still says "Coming Soon." Callie Mae's Barkery & Bath is planned for 9731 Ridgeview Road. In June, the Johnson County Post reported a target of late fall, likely October or November. Neither one has been confirmed open. The Star also named Gio Outdoors, an outdoor retailer, as a planned tenant. If these three open, the west end will have more reasons to visit than the brewery alone.

Lenexa also lost a stop this year. The Sonic Drive-In at 15745 W. 87th St. closed on July 12. It was the chain's last Lenexa location.

Two outdoor projects are moving more slowly. The rebuilt Ad Astra Pool opened July 4, later than planned because of rain delays. It added a current channel, a new bathhouse and year-round restrooms at the park. The Black Hoof Southern Connection is a planned trail of about 1.47 miles along 95th Street, linking Buffalo Meadows Park and Black Hoof Park. It is still in design, with a 2026 to 2027 schedule. The city is taking survey input on the route through Oct. 23. Lenexa's next big outdoor festival is the Spinach Festival on Sept. 11, 2027.

At The Huff Group, we follow openings like these because they change how each part of Lenexa works day to day, from 95th and Quivira out to Prairie Star Parkway. If you'd like to talk about what is opening near your street and what it could mean for your home, book an appointment with our team.
